Facing Near Total Industry Disruption: My Uncertainty About the Next Five Years

Navigating Change: The Future of E-Commerce in an AI-Driven World

As someone with nearly two decades of experience in the e-commerce industry, I find myself at a crossroads, grappling with uncertainty about the future. At just 30 years old, I’ve devoted my career to this dynamic field, starting in sales at 14 and gradually advancing to my current position as the Director of Partnerships at my agency. Throughout my journey, I’ve held significant roles including Director of Product Management and Director of Operations, focusing primarily on web development, design, and extensive marketing campaigns.

My experience spans projects that range from $20,000 to over $1 million, with various strategic elements like Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO), User Interface/User Experience (UI/UX) design, and upsell strategies. However, the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence are reshaping the landscape of my industry faster than I ever anticipated.

A striking example of this transformation can be seen in one of my previous workplaces, where a strong emphasis on search engine optimization (SEO) once led to a team of 25 copywriters prior to 2021. After recently reconnecting with a colleague from that agency, I learned that the team has dwindled to just four writers, all while their SEO department generates $20,000 more in billable work per month compared to when I was there. The introduction of AI has enabled them to replace numerous junior writers, allowing lead writers to focus on refining AI-generated content that adheres to copyright guidelines.

In another agency I’ve observed, the entire U.S. development team was replaced by a team from Latin America, now relying heavily on AI tools like ChatGPT for most of their communication via platforms such as Jira and Slack.

While I don’t believe our industry is on the verge of collapse, it is undeniable that powerful AI tools are automating significant aspects of our work. From translating Figma designs into functional websites to generating the necessary code for upsells without the need for developers, the capabilities of AI are mind-boggling. With platforms like Google implementing AI and prompt-based search operations that are rapidly evolving, the traditional SEO landscape is being reshaped before our eyes.

As I reflect on these developments, I am left contemplating what the next five years will hold for my career and the industry as a whole. The prospect of increased automation through AI has prompted me to pursue my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification while also considering a transition back into a Head of Project Management
