Forecasting the upheaval: How my industry will be transformed and my uncertain future in five years

Navigating the Future: A 30-Year-Old’s Perspective on the Evolving eCommerce Landscape

As I reflect on my journey through the eCommerce industry, I find myself at a crossroads that is both exhilarating and daunting. At just 30 years old, I’ve spent the last 16 years immersed in this field, with my career beginning at the young age of 14. My trajectory has taken me from sales to various leadership roles, including Director of Project Management, Director of Operations, and now, Director of Partnerships at my current agency.

My experiences have primarily centered around web development and design projects, alongside large-scale SEO and eCommerce marketing initiatives. I’ve had the privilege to lead projects with budgets ranging from $20,000 to over a million dollars, overseeing intricate strategies in Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO), User Interface/User Experience (UI/UX) planning, and upselling tactics.

However, a seismic shift is happening in our industry—one that I never fully anticipated. The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming our domain at an unprecedented pace. To illustrate, I recently learned about a former agency I was part of, which, at its peak, employed a robust team of 25 copywriters focused on SEO. Today, that number has dwindled to just 4, as AI tools have made it possible for the agency to handle a significantly higher volume of work—$20,000 more billable hours per month—while relying predominantly on a few lead writers to refine AI-generated content.

Similarly, another agency I know has replaced its entire U.S. development team with talent from Latin America, who utilize ChatGPT to streamline communication across platforms like Jira and Slack. This trend underscores a broader reality: AI is not just a supplemental tool; it’s reshaping how we operate.

While I don’t believe our industry is on the brink of collapse, the trajectory is clear. AI capabilities are advancing rapidly, with tools now capable of constructing websites from Figma files or sketches and generating precise code for upsells without any development assistance. Observing Google’s AI and prompt-based search systems gradually usurping traditional SEO methods only adds to the sense of urgency.

As I contemplate the next five years, I am left in a state of uncertainty regarding my role in this increasingly automated landscape. With the prospect of AI significantly altering job functions, I’ve taken proactive steps by pursuing my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. Additionally, I’m considering a potential shift
