Predicting the Future of My Industry: Facing the Uncertainty of Being Fully Transformed in the Coming Years
Navigating the Future of E-commerce: Adapting to AI Disruption
As a professional entrenched in the e-commerce industry since my early teenage years, I stand at the precipice of significant change—a shift that is reshaping the landscape of our field. At just 30 years old, I find myself pondering an uncertain future, questioning what my career will look like in five years as technology continues to evolve at an unprecedented pace.
Starting my journey at age 14, I have accumulated nearly two decades of experience, particularly within e-commerce agencies. My career progression, which began in sales and led me to noteworthy positions such as Director of Project Management, Director of Operations, and most recently, Director of Partnerships, has provided me with a solid foundation in web development, design, and digital marketing strategies. My expertise encompasses a wide range of projects, with budgets varying from $20,000 to over $1 million, and I have contributed to numerous initiatives such as Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO), User Interface/User Experience (UI/UX) planning, and upsell strategies.
However, the rapid integration of artificial intelligence into our industry has sparked a wave of transformation that I had not foreseen. Reflecting on my past experiences, I learned that a previous agency I worked with, renowned for its strong SEO team, employed 25 copywriters before 2021. Recently, I reconnected with a colleague there, and to my surprise, they now have only four writers left. Remarkably, their SEO department’s billable hours have increased by $20,000 compared to when I was part of the team. The efficiency of AI now enables them to replace many junior copywriters, allowing the lead writers to simply oversee prompt adjustments to navigate copyright challenges.
In another instance, an agency I am familiar with eliminated its entire U.S. development team, opting to hire developers from Latin America who now depend heavily on tools like ChatGPT for communication on project management platforms such as Jira and Slack.
While I don’t foresee the complete collapse of my industry, the trends are clear: AI is automating many of the roles that once required a human touch. For instance, I’m witnessing AI tools capable of constructing entire websites from Figma designs or even rudimentary sketches. The capacity of AI to generate precise code for implementing upsell features without the need for developers is becoming increasingly apparent. Furthermore, Google’s AI-driven prompt-based search system is actively transforming traditional SEO methodologies.
