How Automation Will Transform My Field and Leave Me Uncertain About My Future in Five Years
Navigating Change: Reflections on the Future of E-Commerce in an AI-Driven World
As I stand at the intersection of my career and rapid technological advancement, I find myself grappling with uncertainty like never before. At 30 years old, I have dedicated the better part of my life to the e-commerce sector, having started my journey at just 14. Over the past 16 years, I have built a career working with various e-commerce agencies, progressively moving up the ranks from a sales role to my current position as the Director of Partnerships at my agency.
My expertise has predominantly revolved around web design and development, as well as executing extensive SEO and e-commerce marketing campaigns. I have been involved in projects ranging from $20,000 to over $1 million, handling intricate scopes that demanded strategic planning in areas like Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO), user interface/user experience (UI/UX) design, and upselling strategies.
However, the advent of artificial intelligence is radically shaking the foundations of my industry. A stark example comes from a previous agency where I spent several years focused on SEO. Until 2021, we had a robust team of 25 copywriters. Just recently, I reconnected with a friend who still works there and learned that the team has been reduced to a mere four writers. Remarkably, their SEO department is now generating $20,000 more in billables each month compared to the time I spent there. It seems that AI has enabled the replacement of numerous junior writers, with lead writers now tasked mainly with refining AI-generated prompts to navigate copyright constraints.
Another eye-opening experience was learning about an agency that completely overhauled its development team. They transitioned from a U.S.-based workforce to relying on developers based in Latin America, who now use ChatGPT to facilitate communication via platforms like Jira and Slack.
While I’m not suggesting the demise of my industry is imminent, the changes are evident. AI is already capable of creating websites based on Figma designs or even rough sketches and can generate the specific code required for implementing upsells without any developer intervention. Furthermore, I’m witnessing the shift as Google AI and prompt-based search functionalities begin to eclipse traditional SEO methodologies.
As the landscape evolves, I find myself pondering what the next five years will bring for my career and industry. Given the rapid automation trends driven by AI, I am actively pursuing my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. I am also contemplating a potential transition back into
