Forecasting the Future: How Industry Transformation Leaves Me Uncertain About My Path in the Next Five Years
Navigating the Uncertainty: A Glimpse into the Future of E-Commerce in an AI-Driven World
As I sit back and reflect on my decade-plus journey in the e-commerce industry, I find myself facing an unprecedented uncertainty. Having entered the space at the tender age of 14 and climbing my way up from sales to my current role as Director of Partnerships, I’ve witnessed incredible transformation. However, the rapidly evolving landscape has left me contemplating my path just five years down the line.
My experience has spanned various strategic roles in web development, project management, and e-commerce marketing—dealing with projects that range from $20,000 to over a million dollars. Over the years, I have been deeply involved in aspects like Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO), User Interface/User Experience (UI/UX) planning, and devised upselling strategies that contribute significantly to agency growth.
Yet, the relentless rise of artificial intelligence is reshaping the industry faster than I had ever anticipated. Just to illustrate, I recently touched base with an old colleague from one of my former agencies that predominantly focused on SEO. Back in the day, we had a robust team of 25 copywriters. Today, that number has dwindled to just four. Ironically, their SEO department is pulling in $20,000 more monthly than when I left, thanks in large part to the introduction of AI tools that are streamlining workflows and enabling the team to largely substitute junior writers with automated solutions.
The trend isn’t isolated. Another agency I observed recently let go of its entire U.S. development team, opting instead for a team based in Latin America that leans heavily on AI communication tools like ChatGPT for managing tasks through channels like Jira and Slack.
While I’m not suggesting that the industry is on the brink of collapse, the trajectory is startling. AI is now capable of transforming Figma designs into functional websites and generating precise code for upselling features—all without a developer’s involvement. I’ve witnessed significant shifts in the traditional SEO landscape as Google ID and prompt-based searches begin to dominate, altering the very foundation of our industry.
In light of these advancements, I’m currently pursuing my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, contemplating a pivot back into a Head of Project Management or a Senior PM role—this time perhaps in a different domain altogether. The ambiguity of the future keeps me on my toes, and while I’m unsure where my career will ultimately lead me, one thing is clear: change is upon us,
