How Automation is Transforming My Field and Leaving Me Uncertain About the Future in Five Years
Navigating Change: The Impact of AI on the eCommerce Industry
As I reflect on my journey through the eCommerce landscape, I find myself at a pivotal moment—one that raises significant questions about the future of my career. At 30 years old, I have spent nearly half my life immersed in this industry, starting my adventure at the tender age of 14. Since then, I have climbed the ranks within eCommerce agencies, taking on various roles from sales to my current position as Director of Partnerships.
Throughout my career, I have gained extensive experience in web development, design, and orchestrating large-scale SEO and marketing campaigns. I’ve been instrumental in projects with budgets ranging from $20,000 to over $1 million, spearheading strategies in Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO), User Interface/User Experience (UI/UX) planning, and upselling techniques.
However, the landscape is evolving at an unprecedented pace due to the emergence of artificial intelligence. The changes are startling. A recent conversation with a former colleague revealed that an agency I once worked for has dramatically reduced its team of copywriters—from 25 prior to 2021 to a mere 4 today. This shift is attributed to the efficiency of AI, which is now capable of generating high-quality content faster than ever. Their SEO department has also seen a significant increase in billable hours, further emphasizing the transformative power of technology.
In another instance, an agency I’ve been associated with transitioned from a U.S.-based development team to leveraging talent from Latin America, utilizing AI tools like ChatGPT to facilitate communication through platforms such as Jira and Slack. These developments reflect a broader trend where junior roles are increasingly being replaced by AI-driven solutions, raising concerns about job security in the industry.
While I am not predicting a complete collapse of the eCommerce sector, it is clear that a shift is underway. We are witnessing the capabilities of AI that can effortlessly create websites from design sketches and generate code for complex functionalities without the need for a developer. Traditional SEO practices are also undergoing a metamorphosis as AI and prompt-based search technologies gain traction.
As I navigate this uncertain terrain, I find myself contemplating a career shift. I am currently pursuing my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and evaluating the possibility of moving into a senior project management position in a different industry. The transformation happening within my current field certainly raises questions about the future: Where will I land in the next five years?
