Facing Industry Disruption: Uncertainty About My Future as My Field Transforms Within Years
Navigating Uncertainty: The Future of E-Commerce in an AI-Driven Landscape
As I approach my 30th birthday, I find myself reflecting on two decades of experience in the e-commerce sector—an industry that is on the brink of profound transformation. In a matter of years, advancements in artificial intelligence are poised to reshape the landscape in ways I never expected. For the first time, I feel uncertain about where I’ll be five years from now.
My journey in e-commerce started when I was just 14 years old, and it has been an exhilarating ride. Over the past decade and a half, I have worked alongside various e-commerce agencies, initially stepping into the world of sales before progressing through various strategic roles. Currently, I serve as the Director of Partnerships at an agency where I leverage my expertise in web development, design, and extensive marketing campaigns that can range from $20,000 to more than $1 million in value. Along my journey, I have spearheaded initiatives in conversion rate optimization, user interface and user experience planning, and upselling strategies.
However, the rapid evolution of AI technology is reshaping the very foundation of my industry faster than I ever anticipated. Take, for instance, a previous agency where I was part of a once-thriving SEO team, boasting 25 copywriters prior to 2021. In a recent conversation with a colleague who remains there, I learned that their writing team has dwindled to just four as they adapt to AI-generated content. Incredibly, the SEO department now generates an additional $20,000 in billables each month compared to when I was part of it. The swift integration of AI allows them to replace several junior writers entirely, leaving lead writers to refine prompts for originality.
Similarly, at another agency, the entire U.S.-based development team has been replaced by developers from Latin America, who now primarily communicate through tools like ChatGPT for tasks managed via Jira and Slack. These changes underline how AI is becoming an integral part of daily operations, streamlining processes that once required substantial human effort.
While I am not convinced that my industry is on the brink of collapse, I can see the writing on the wall. AI tools are already capable of transforming Figma designs or even rough sketches into fully functional websites. In recent observations, I’ve witnessed AI create precise coding required for implementing upsell features, all without a single developer’s input. Furthermore, Google’s advancements in AI and prompt-based search continue
