How the Coming Automation Will Transform My Industry and Leave Me Wondering About My Future in 5 Years
Navigating the Changing Landscape of E-Commerce: A Personal Reflection on Industry Transformation
As we stand on the brink of transformative changes in the e-commerce industry, I find myself grappling with an unprecedented sense of uncertainty regarding my professional future. At 30 years old, I’ve spent more than half my life immersed in this field, beginning my journey at just 14. Over the years, I’ve accumulated experience across various roles, including Director of Project Management and Director of Operations, and I currently serve as the Director of Partnerships at my agency.
Throughout my career, my focus has revolved around web development, design, and executing comprehensive marketing strategies for e-commerce. These endeavors have involved projects with budgets ranging from $20,000 to over $1 million, characterized by meticulous planning and strategic execution. I’ve contributed to initiatives in conversion rate optimization, user interface and experience design, and upselling tactics, each adding unique value to our clients.

In a recent conversation with a friend still at the agency, I learned they now operate with just four writers. Surprisingly, their SEO department is generating $20,000 more in monthly billable hours compared to when I was there. The shift indicates a growing reliance on AI tools, which are taking over tasks typically assigned to junior copywriters, allowing senior staff to focus on refining AI-generated content.
Another agency has made a similar pivot, replacing its entire U.S. development team with talent from Latin America who primarily rely on platforms like ChatGPT for communication through tools such as Jira and Slack. These developments suggest a trend toward automation that could forever alter the employment landscape in our sector.
While I don’t anticipate a total collapse of the industry, the momentum behind AI and automation is undeniable. We are witnessing machines capable of constructing websites directly from design files—or even sketches. Furthermore, I’ve seen AI tools generate precise code for implementing upselling features without any developer involvement. As a result, it feels as though traditional SEO practices are gradually ceding ground to AI-driven search methods.
With the horizon appearing increasingly automated, I find myself questioning what the next five years will hold for me and the industry. To proactively adapt to these changes, I am pursuing a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and contemplating a transition into a
