As artificial intelligence continues to advance at an unprecedented pace, concerns about our collective preparedness are mounting. While many view AI as merely a tool, it’s crucial to understand the profound implications it holds for the future of work, economy, and society at large.

A Personal Perspective on AI and Its Potential

I am not opposed to AI—in fact, I strongly believe in leveraging robotics and intelligent systems to transform the way we live and work. My vision is a world where humans do not have to endure menial or hazardous jobs just to survive. Instead, we should be free to pursue passions, creativity, and personal growth, taking care of our planet and each other. To me, human life should be about enjoyment and stewardship, empowered by technology rather than hindered by it.

The Misconceptions and Underestimations

Recently, I encountered someone who uses AI daily to develop small-scale applications, yet he expressed a dangerously limited view of AI’s capabilities. When I explained that many significant challenges in AI—such as hallucinations and abstract reasoning—have been effectively addressed for enterprise use, he responded with a flawed analogy that trivialized AI’s progress.

Despite acknowledging that AI’s technology has advanced rapidly and that he personally benefits from its tools, he likened AI to a simple “stupid” tool, as if humans still hold control over its potential. He even suggested I should stop just reading about AI and start actively seeking ways to profit from it, like some sort of race to monetize a passing trend.

The Broader Reality: AI’s Transformative Power

This mindset overlooks the broader reality: AI and automation are poised to drastically reshape the job market. The majority of white-collar roles—ranging from administrative tasks to complex data analysis—are on the chopping block. As AI becomes capable of performing tasks traditionally thought to require human intelligence, unemployment rates could surge significantly. Some experts predict that within the next year, unemployment could reach 12% or higher, continuing its upward trajectory.

Furthermore, these changes may exacerbate economic inequality. A global workforce willing to accept minimal wages might further depress wages and make it even harder for individuals to find meaningful employment. The unemployment figures we see publicly do not fully account for underemployment or those who have dropped out of the labor force altogether.

A Dangerously Short-Sighted Perspective

Despite these sobering forecasts, many are still focused on short-term gains—attempting to find ways to
