Understanding AI Detection: Why Overly Formal or Polite Texts Are Often Flagged

In today’s digital landscape, AI detection tools have become increasingly sophisticated, but I recently uncovered an intriguing pattern that sheds light on how these systems analyze written content.

During a series of tests with various AI detectors, I noticed a recurring trend: texts that are excessively formal, highly structured, or overly polite tend to be labeled as “AI-generated.” Notably, this isn’t because these texts are necessarily produced by artificial intelligence but rather because of their tone and style.

To explore this further, I examined famous speeches and historical texts—such as Martin Luther King’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech, selected Bible verses, and foundational documents like the U.S. Constitution. Interestingly, some of these, often perceived as deeply respectful or reverent, were flagged by detection tools as potentially AI-created. Yet, when I prompted an AI to generate similar content, the same detectors did not mark it as synthetic.

This discrepancy led me to a theory: AI detectors might associate heightened formality, obedience, and reverence with characteristics they typically attribute to machine-generated texts. In essence, these tools seem to interpret overly polished and courteous language as a telltale sign of artificial authorship.

What does this imply about our perceptions of AI-generated content? It suggests that the markers of what we consider “machine-like” language are rooted in certain stylistic traits—namely, a tone that prioritizes politeness, structure, and deference.

Has anyone else observed similar patterns or insights? Or perhaps, am I reading too much into this trend? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
