Navigating the AI Landscape: Seeking Growth in a Dynamic Field
Hello, fellow tech enthusiasts!
In today’s rapidly evolving world of Artificial Intelligence, it’s no surprise that many are eager to delve deeper into this field—myself included. Currently, I work in AI as a contractor, while also pursuing a Master’s in Computer Science. My journey began with a bioinformatics major, where I developed a solid foundation in math and coding. Eventually, I transitioned into sociology and graduated with experience as an undergraduate research assistant.
My professional background is diverse; I kicked off my career at Apple, engaging in product and GIS research for special projects. Following that, I spent six years in various public educational institutions—first in K-12 settings and then at the university level. My focus shifted progressively from qualitative to quantitative research, culminating in my current role as a senior AI researcher for a major tech company. Unfortunately, due to a strict NDA, I cannot disclose the company name, but I assure you I am surrounded by cutting-edge work.
Despite my title, I find myself in a position that doesn’t demand extensive coding. I aspire to transition into roles more focused on applied research or as a research scientist. However, many of the opportunities I encounter insist on either a PhD or significant coding and machine learning experience, both of which I currently lack.
Balancing a demanding full-time job with my studies has proven challenging, limiting my ability to take on additional coursework. My goal is to upskill efficiently, and while I can attend workshops or boot camps infrequently, consistency has been elusive.
Here’s where I need your insights: What steps should I take to bridge the gap between my experience and the qualifications required for my desired roles? Additionally, what job titles might I be eligible for that could lead me in the right direction? I’m eager to explore options beyond operational roles and truly expand my horizons in this thrilling domain.
Thank you for your guidance as I navigate this pivotal stage in my career!
