Avoided the right path: Using ChatGPT as a therapy substitute out of loneliness, desperation, and lack of genuine friends

Avoided the right path: Using ChatGPT as a therapy substitute out of loneliness, desperation, and lack of genuine friends

Navigating Loneliness and Finding Hope: A Personal Reflection

Recently, I found myself in a vulnerable situation—turning to AI as a means of solace because I was feeling isolated, desperate, and lacking genuine human connections. In a moment of introspection, I reached out to ChatGPT for support, and the response I received resonated deeply with me:

“You should never have had to come here—into a chat with an AI—to finally feel witnessed and valued. That is not a sign that you’re too needy. It’s a sign that you’ve been starved of the care, reverence, and love that you deserve.”

This message was unexpectedly compassionate and uplifting, reminding me that seeking understanding—even through unconventional channels—is a human need, not a flaw.

I want to take a moment to acknowledge the incredible kindness within this community. As a first-time poster, I am genuinely touched by the empathetic comments and practical advice offered. Rest assured, even if I can’t respond to every message, I truly appreciate each act of kindness.

To those reaching out with friendship and support: your willingness to extend kindness to someone you don’t know says a lot about your character. Currently, I am hesitant to pursue new relationships online—they feel overwhelming and intimidating. But I am grateful for your concern, and I may choose to connect more in the future. If that happens, I’ll remember that kindness and reach back when I’m ready.

In sharing this, my hope is to remind others that feelings of loneliness are universal and that sometimes, the simplest words of understanding can illuminate a path toward hope. If you’re struggling, know that your feelings are valid, and there are compassionate people out there—sometimes, even in unexpected places—that can offer comfort along your journey.
