Many worry that as AI-generated content becomes more prevalent, we might see an overwhelming tide of bogus information flooding social media platforms, making it harder to discern truth from falsehood.

The Argument for Concern

It’s true that AI algorithms can produce a vast amount of seemingly convincing content, ranging from memes to articles. When observing broad social media activity, AI-generated posts do appear more frequently than before, leading to fears that disinformation could escalate exponentially. The logic seems straightforward: more AI-produced content equals more potential misinformation.

A Different Perspective

However, I believe this perspective may overestimate the impact AI will have in this domain. Consider a typical user’s social media consumption: if I randomly scroll through TikTok or a similar platform, I might view around 100 to 150 short videos in a session. Injecting AI-generated content into these feeds doesn’t necessarily increase the total number of videos I watch; it merely replaces or adds to existing content, which I would probably consume anyway.

It’s important to acknowledge that humans have been generating vast amounts of disinformation long before AI’s rise. The scale of human-made fake news, sensationalism, and propaganda is staggering — there’s more than enough content to serve my media diet. Adding more AI-generated disinformation doesn’t significantly alter this landscape because I’m unlikely to encounter a proportionally larger volume of falsehoods; my consumption patterns are limited, and my interests tend to direct me toward specific content types.

Content Formats and Disinformation’s Subtlety

Much of the disinformation today isn’t just blatant lies but often presented in formats that make deception less obvious. For example, a clip featuring a celebrity or politician edited to appear as if they said something they didn’t can be very convincing, especially when coupled with familiar voices or contexts. Such doctored content can slip past viewers who aren’t scrutinizing closely because it looks authentic at first glance.

Considering this, the primary challenge isn’t necessarily the quantity of disinformation but its form and presentation. The proliferation of memes, short clips, and highly edited videos creates a fertile ground for manipulation, regardless of whether AI is involved.
