The Prisoner’s Dilemma of Adoption
The widespread adoption of AI creates a classic multiplayer prisoner’s dilemma. Even if individual entities wish to hold back on deploying powerful AI systems for fear of systemic risks, the incentive to participate and remain competitive makes collective restraint unlikely. This dynamic accelerates the transformation.
Connecting to Complexity Theory: P vs NP
I’ve also drawn parallels with computational complexity theory—specifically the P versus NP problem. In this analogy:
- AI makes solving NP problems (complex, hard problems) trivial.
- Verification, which is simpler (P), remains manageable or is delegated to elite human verifiers.
This creates a scenario where humans become specialized nodes responsible for oversight rather than primary problem-solvers. An elite class of verifiers may emerge to authenticate AI solutions, effectively acting as the legal and moral guardians of the system.
