Unlike humans, AI lacks a body, feelings, or consciousness, meaning it does not truly “experience” consequences—be they positive or negative—for its actions. While we can program reward and punishment mechanisms, these serve only as surface-level incentives for machine behavior; they do not evoke genuine feelings or moral considerations.
This disconnect echoes challenges we’ve seen with social media: people can say or do terrible things online without experiencing immediate repercussions, leading to a dehumanizing effect on interactions. Similarly, when engaging with large language models or AI agents that operate without shame, guilt, or remorse, the ethical landscape becomes murkier.
The question then arises: are we headed toward a situation where the inability of AI to understand or be affected by consequences could lead to unforeseen or dangerous outcomes? As these systems become more sophisticated, understanding and addressing their lack of moral and emotional grounding becomes essential.
