No Need to Fear the AI Doomsday – These AIs Can’t Write Code
The Misplaced Worry of AI in Coding: Why You Shouldn’t Fear the Rise of Machines
In the fast-paced world of technology, discussions about artificial intelligence (AI) often spiral into concerns about an impending “AI Apocalypse.” However, my recent experience with AI tools like ChatGPT and CLAUDE has led me to a rather different conclusion: AI simply isn’t ready to take on the complexities of coding just yet.
My journey began when I decided to create a set of graphics for my Substack newsletter. Initially, I thought it might be efficient to employ a familiar tool—PowerPoint. However, lured by the promise of AI-driven shortcuts, I decided to embrace the challenge and see what magic these AI platforms could conjure. After all, who wouldn’t want to save time on a project?
What followed was anything but a time-saving endeavor. My ambitious venture with Claude turned out to be a relentless game of whack-a-mole. For every issue we attempted to resolve, a new set of complications surfaced. Rather than a smooth, effortless experience, I found myself in a chaotic cycle of confusion and frustration. Ultimately, after several days of wrestling with the AI, I sat down and completed my PowerPoint presentation in a little over three hours—something I could have achieved all along without the technological mishap.
The reality is that current AI capabilities resemble those of a novice coder on their first assignment. They may have potential for growth through methods like Reinforcement Learning from AI-generated Feedback (RLHF) and the guidance of human experts, but we’re far from the day when they can autonomously navigate coding hurdles with proficiency.
Therefore, the widespread anxiety surrounding AI’s impending takeover seems largely unfounded. Much of the fear is perpetuated by those with dubious motives, seeking to capitalize on sensational narratives. Instead of fretting over the future, perhaps it’s time to relax a bit—pour yourself a glass of Scotch, take a couple of aspirins, and if you’re into it, consider some cannabis. Embracing a balanced perspective can be far more beneficial than succumbing to unnecessary fear.
In conclusion, while AI continues to develop and demonstrate remarkable capabilities, it currently lacks the finesse and understanding that human programmers bring to the table. As we navigate this evolving landscape, let’s remain grounded and focus on how we can leverage AI as a tool rather than viewing it as an impending threat.
