My Recent Fortnights with Google’s AI: A Mixture of Awe and Fear
Exploring the Cutting Edge of AI: My Journey with Google’s New AI Model
Over the past two weekends, I embarked on a fascinating journey into the world of artificial intelligence, specifically with Google’s latest AI model. To say I was both impressed and terrified by the experience would be an understatement.
Allow me to provide some context. As a civil engineer specializing in design and project management, my background doesn’t encompass coding or computer science. Nevertheless, my curiosity led me to enroll in a complimentary student license for this new AI tool. My goal was simple: to determine if someone with no programming experience could effectively use AI to develop a practical application for my small-scale projects.
I envisioned a straightforward program—nothing overly complex—featuring project tracking capabilities, finance management, and health indicators. While existing software solutions offer similar functionality, I wanted something tailored to my preferences and needs.
Over the course of about eight hours last weekend, I interacted with the AI model as if I were communicating with a team of developers. To my surprise, it generated entire code snippets for me. It guided me on which programs to install and where to input the code, making the process accessible and surprisingly intuitive.
The outcome? I successfully created a small application that, while not perfect, meets my requirements and works the way I envisioned. The fact that I achieved this without any coding background is nothing short of remarkable.
However, the experience also left me feeling somewhat uneasy. The rapid advancement of AI models like this one raises numerous questions about the future. If they continue to evolve at this pace, who knows what capabilities they will possess in the near future?
I’m still navigating how to share my experiences—if I’ve chosen the right platform or audience for my insights, feedback is always welcome. Looking ahead, I plan to experiment with creating more small-scale applications. The journey has just begun, and I’m eager to see where it leads.
Stay tuned for upcoming posts where I’ll share my progress and insights on developing AI-driven tools!
