My Journey with Google’s AI Model: A Civil Engineer’s Experience

Over the past two weekends, I embarked on an intriguing adventure with Google’s latest AI model. The experience has been a blend of fascination and apprehension, leaving me both impressed and a bit unsettled.

A Bit About Me

To provide some context, I come from a background in civil engineering, specifically focused on design and management. Coding and computer science are not part of my professional toolkit, yet I recently decided to explore the world of artificial intelligence by enrolling in a free student license for Google’s new AI model.

Diving into the World of AI

My primary goal was to determine if someone without any coding experience could utilize this powerful tool to create a functional application. I envisioned a straightforward program that could track my small-scale projects, helping me visualize project health through charts and financial tracking. Although there are existing software solutions for this purpose, I sought a personalized approach that catered to my specific needs.

With this ambition in mind, I dedicated around eight hours over the weekend to interact with the AI model, engaging with it as though I were communicating with a team of developers. To my astonishment, the model generated entire blocks of code for me and guided me on which programs to download and where to implement the code.

The Outcome

The results have been impressive; I was able to create a functional program without any prior coding knowledge. While the application isn’t perfect and still has room for improvement, it serves my needs effectively and reflects my unique vision.

A Cautionary Note

However, amid my excitement, I felt a twinge of unease. As I pondered the capabilities of these advanced AI models, I realized that their potential is only going to grow exponentially from here. This raises critical questions about the implications of such technology as it becomes increasingly integrated into our daily lives.
