Relax: AI Cannot Yet Write Code, So the Apocalypse Is Unlikely
The AI Coding Misadventure: Why You Shouldn’t Fear the Machines Just Yet
In the rapidly evolving landscape of technology, the topic of artificial intelligence (AI) often evokes intense speculation about its potential to disrupt various industries, particularly coding. However, my recent experiences with AI tools like ChatGPT and CLAUDE have led me to a different conclusion: the fear surrounding AI’s coding capabilities may be overstated.
My adventure began when I sought a more efficient method to create graphic files for my Substack newsletter. Initially, I considered using PowerPoint, a familiar tool that would likely take a couple of hours to complete. But in the spirit of innovation, I decided to explore the capabilities of AI to expedite the process. After all, what could go wrong?
What unfolded was more akin to a rollercoaster ride than a smooth journey. Partnering with Claude, I embarked on what I optimistically thought would be a straightforward project aimed at delivering a professional set of graphics. My excitement soon turned into frustration, as we seemed to enter a never-ending cycle of troubleshooting. Each time we resolved one issue, a myriad of new problems would suddenly emerge, akin to playing a frustrating game of whack-a-mole. While I could detail every misstep, let’s just say my favorite term to describe the outcome was “cluster***k.”
After several days of trial and error, I finally ceded defeat to my AI companions and created a polished PowerPoint presentation in just over three hours—proof that sometimes going the traditional route is the best approach.
It’s important to recognize that AI, despite its impressive capabilities, still operates at the level of a novice programmer. While future improvements through reinforcement learning from AI-generated feedback could bolster their skills, the reality is that current AI tools sometimes fall short of the mark.
So, what does this mean for the fear of an impending AI apocalypse? For now, the concern seems overblown—often fueled by sensationalism or the agendas of those looking to capitalize on public anxiety. Instead of succumbing to these worries, I recommend taking a moment to unwind: perhaps enjoy a glass of Scotch, take a couple of aspirin, and find peace of mind. If you’re feeling adventurous, cannabis might do the trick as well.
In conclusion, while AI holds promise for enhancing our workflows and automating tasks, it’s essential to approach these tools with a clear understanding of their limitations. Rather than fearing their rise, let’s harness the potential of AI
