My Recent Fortnight with Google’s AI: Awe-Inspiring Yet Concerning Experiences

Navigating New Frontiers: My Journey with Google’s AI Model

Over the past two weekends, I embarked on an intriguing experience with Google’s AI model. The combination of fascination and apprehension has left a strong impression on me.

To provide some context, I come from a background in civil engineering, specializing in design and management, without any formal training in coding or computer science. Recently, I decided to sign up for a free student license of Google’s latest AI model, curious about its capabilities and applications.

My goal was straightforward: I wanted to explore whether someone with no programming experience could utilize this innovative tool to develop a simple application for tracking my small-scale projects. The aim was to create something tailored to my needs—incorporating basic charts and financial tracking along with a project health indicator. While existing software already fulfills these functions, I was eager to design a system that aligned with my specific requirements.

I dedicated nearly eight hours last weekend to this endeavor. In the process, I interacted with the model as if I were collaborating with a team of developers. To my astonishment, it generated the entire code I needed. It even guided me in selecting the right programs to download and where to insert the code.

The outcome was impressive: I successfully created a small program without any coding knowledge at all. While it’s not perfect and still requires tweaking, it functions in a way that meets my expectations.

However, I also find myself somewhat unsettled by this experience. The potential of these AI models is vast, and as they continue to evolve, the capabilities they offer will only get stronger.

Looking forward, I plan to explore the creation of additional small-scale applications in the coming week. If you have any insights or tips for navigating this exciting yet daunting landscape, I would love to hear from you!
