How the Industry Disruption Will Reshape My Future: Facing Uncertainty for the First Time in My Career

Navigating Change: The Future of E-Commerce in an AI-Driven World

As the landscape of e-commerce evolves at an unprecedented pace, many professionals in the industry are beginning to question what the future holds. Recently, I found myself reflecting on my own career path and the transformations happening around me.

Having immersed myself in the e-commerce sector since I was just 14 years old, I’ve gained extensive experience working with various eCommerce agencies. My journey, which took off in sales back in 2015, has enabled me to climb the ranks to my current position as the Director of Partnerships. Over the years, I’ve been involved in a range of projects that have seen budgets stretching from $20,000 to over $1 million, focusing on critical areas like web development, design, SEO, and comprehensive marketing strategies. I’ve steered initiatives in conversion rate optimization (CRO), user interface/user experience (UI/UX) design, and upselling strategies, among others.

However, the rapid advancement of AI technology is reshaping the very foundation of my industry in ways I could hardly have imagined. A prime example is a former agency where I worked, which once boasted a team of 25 copywriters dedicated to SEO. In a recent conversation with a friend who still works there, I learned that this number has plummeted to just four writers. Despite this dramatic reduction, the agency is generating $20,000 more in monthly billable hours than when I was part of the team. This shift highlights how AI has the potential to replace many junior roles; senior writers are now expected to refine AI-generated content to comply with copyright standards.

Another agency I’m familiar with made the decision to disband their entire U.S. development team, transitioning to a workforce in Latin America, where developers increasingly rely on AI tools like ChatGPT for project management communication.

While I’m not suggesting that my industry is on the verge of collapse, it’s hard to ignore the implications of these trends. Automation powered by AI is already capable of transforming design sketches and Figma files into complete websites. I’ve witnessed AI produce the necessary code for upselling features with zero developer intervention. Meanwhile, search engines are evolving, with Google’s AI-driven capabilities gradually replacing traditional SEO practices as we know them.

Given these rapid advancements, I find myself at a crossroads, contemplating my future in an industry that seems to be leaning toward full automation. I am currently pursuing a Project Management Professional
