Facing the Future: How Rapid Industry Changes Leave Me Uncertain About My Path in Five Years

Navigating Change: The Future of eCommerce in the Age of AI

As I reflect on my career in the eCommerce sector, I find myself in uncharted territory. Having spent over 15 years in the industry, I have witnessed a remarkable evolution, but nothing quite like the rapid transformation we are experiencing now. At the age of 30, a sense of uncertainty looms over my professional future, particularly as I consider what the landscape might look like in five years.

My journey in eCommerce began at the tender age of 14, and since 2015, I have been deeply involved with various eCommerce agencies. Starting in sales, I gradually climbed the ranks, holding positions such as Director of Project Management, Director of Operations, and now, I’m the Director of Partnerships at my current agency. My experience encompasses web development and design projects, as well as large-scale SEO and comprehensive eCommerce marketing campaigns. The financial scope of these projects has ranged from $20,000 to over $1 million, each requiring precise strategic planning. I have led critical initiatives in conversion rate optimization (CRO), user interface/user experience (UI/UX), and upsell strategies, among others.

However, the advent of artificial intelligence has accelerated changes in my industry far more rapidly than I could have foreseen. For instance, one agency where I previously worked thrived on SEO, employing a team of 25 talented copywriters prior to 2021. In a recent conversation with a former colleague who still works there, I learned that the team has since dwindled to just four writers. Remarkably, their SEO department’s billables have increased by $20,000 per month, due in large part to the replacement of junior writers with AI technologies capable of generating content that only requires minimal human oversight to address copyright concerns.

Moreover, I have observed similar trends in other agencies where entire US development teams have been replaced with teams from Latin America, utilizing tools like ChatGPT to streamline communication through platforms like Jira and Slack.

While I don’t believe that the eCommerce industry is on the brink of collapse, I can see the direction in which it is headed. AI tools are increasingly capable of constructing websites directly from Figma files or even simple sketches. I have witnessed AI generate the necessary code for implementing upsells without any requirement for developer input. Furthermore, the evolution of Google AI and prompt-based search is reshaping traditional SEO practices right before our eyes.

As I contemplate the future, I
