Navigating Change: The Impending Transformation in the eCommerce Industry
As I reflect on my journey within the eCommerce sector, I find myself facing an unprecedented challenge: the realization that in just a few years, my profession could undergo a complete metamorphosis fueled by technological advancements. At the age of 30, I am at a crossroads, uncertain of where my career will lead me.
I entered the eCommerce arena at the tender age of 14 and began my professional career working with various eCommerce agencies in 2015. My initial role in sales gradually evolved as I took on increasingly significant responsibilities, eventually holding positions such as Director of Product Management, Director of Operations, and most recently, Director of Partnerships. Much of my experience has been centered around web development, design, and orchestrating large-scale SEO and marketing initiatives, collaborating on projects with budgets ranging from $20,000 to over a million dollars.

Fast forward to now, and I learned from a colleague that the team has dwindled to just four writers. Astonishingly, their SEO department is generating $20,000 more in billable revenue each month than when I was there, largely due to the capabilities of AI to perform functions traditionally handled by junior writers. The lead writers now focus on perfecting AI-generated prompts to ensure they comply with copyright standards.
Moreover, I have observed similar trends in other agencies. One company eliminated its entire U.S.-based development team, outsourcing to developers in Latin America who now utilize AI tools like ChatGPT to manage communications efficiently through platforms such as Jira and Slack.
While I don’t believe my industry is on the brink of collapse, it’s clear that significant changes are on the horizon. Cutting-edge AI technology is already capable of creating websites directly from Figma files or sketches. I’ve witnessed AI generate precise coding for upsell features without any need for a developer’s intervention. The evolution of search engines and the shift toward AI-driven, prompt-based SEO is rapidly transforming traditional practices before our very eyes.
Faced with this reality, I find myself grappling with uncertainty about the future of my industry. As I pursue my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, I’m contemplating a transition back to a
