Anticipating the Next Five Years: When My Sector Faces Near-Total Transformation and My Future Uncertain
Navigating Change: The Future of E-commerce in the Age of AI
As I sit down to reflect on my career journey in e-commerce, I find myself at a crossroads. At 30 years old, I’ve dedicated the majority of my life to this industry, starting at the young age of 14. Since then, my professional path has taken me through various roles, from sales to my current position as Director of Partnerships at my agency. With each step, my experience has deepened, and I’ve had the chance to lead significant projects in web development, design, and high-stakes marketing campaigns—ranging from elaborate SEO strategies to multimillion-dollar builds.
However, impending changes loomed large, and I find myself grappling with uncertainty about what the next five years will hold for me. The transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the e-commerce landscape is happening at a pace I never anticipated. Just the other day, I caught up with a former colleague who works at an agency that once employed a robust team of 25 copywriters dedicated to SEO. Today, that number has dwindled to just four, yet astonishingly, their department has seen a rise of $20,000 in monthly billable work due to enhanced efficiency driven by AI. They’ve successfully replaced many Junior writers with AI while allowing lead writers to solely focus on refining AI-generated content to avoid copyright issues.
Moreover, I learned that another agency I’m familiar with has completely replaced their U.S. development team with talent from Latin America, who now leverage tools like ChatGPT for managing communications through platforms like Jira and Slack.
While I wouldn’t go so far as to say that the industry is facing imminent collapse, the signs of a monumental shift are undeniably present. AI is now capable of creating complete websites from Figma files and can even generate code for complex features like upsells—eliminating the need for traditional development expertise altogether. Additionally, I am witnessing the evolution of SEO as AI and prompt-based search technologies are ushering in a new era, elevating automated solutions over conventional methods.
As I contemplate my professional future, I am in the process of obtaining my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. I’m seriously considering pivoting towards a role as a Head of Project Management or a Senior Project Manager in a different industry altogether. The uncertainty of my current trajectory is daunting, but amidst the challenges and changes, I see opportunities for growth and adaptation.
