Forecasting My Industry’s Near-Collapse: For the First Time, I’m Uncertain About My Future in 5 Years
Title: Navigating Change: My Uncertain Future in the E-Commerce Industry
In an era where technological advancements are reshaping industries, uncertainty has become a concerning reality for many professionals. As someone who has dedicated nearly two decades to the e-commerce sector, I find myself at a crossroads, unsure of what the next five years will hold.
At 30 years old, I began my journey in the world of e-commerce at just 14. Since then, I’ve accumulated valuable experience by working with various agencies, starting in sales and gradually climbing the ranks. Over the years, I have taken on various leadership roles, including Director of Product Management, Director of Operations, and most recently, Director of Partnerships at my current agency. My expertise lies primarily in web development, design projects, and large-scale SEO marketing campaigns. I’ve been fortunate to lead significant projects, often with budgets ranging from $20,000 to over $1 million, focusing on strategic scopes that encompass conversion rate optimization (CRO), user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) planning, and upsell strategies.
However, the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming my industry faster than I could have imagined. A recent discussion with a colleague at a former agency highlighted a worrying trend: their once-thriving SEO department, which boasted 25 copywriters, has dwindled to just four. Astonishingly, their monthly billable income has increased by $20,000 since I left. The integration of AI has allowed them to replace many junior writers, with the remaining lead writers focusing on refining prompts to ensure compliance with copyright regulations.
In another instance, an agency has drastically shifted its staffing by replacing its entire U.S. development team with developers from Latin America, now primarily communicating through platforms like Jira and Slack with the assistance of ChatGPT.
While I’m not suggesting that my industry is on the brink of collapse, the trajectory is clear—the impact of AI is undeniable. AI tools are now capable of building complete websites from just Figma files or even raw sketches. I’ve witnessed the power of AI generating precise code for implementing upsell strategies without requiring a developer’s intervention. Furthermore, I’m noticing a gradual shift in traditional SEO practices as Google AI and prompt-based search methods gain prominence.
The prospect of a fully automated industry raises profound questions about my role and future in e-commerce. As I pursue my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, I’m contemplating a move back into
