Version 234: “Facing the Future: My Industry’s Near-Certain Transformation and the Uncertainty of My Next Five Years”
The Impending Transformation of the eCommerce Industry: Navigating Uncertainty
As professionals in the ever-evolving eCommerce landscape, it’s impossible to ignore the rapid advancements in technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI). At 30 years old, I find myself reflecting on an industry that has been my home since I was just a teenager. I’ve spent nearly two decades immersed in eCommerce, progressing through various roles—from sales to becoming the Director of Partnerships at my current agency.
My journey has revolved around significant projects, including web development and design, along with large-scale SEO and marketing campaigns. The budgets I’ve managed have ranged immensely—from $20,000 to over a million—allowing me to explore strategic areas like conversion rate optimization (CRO), UI/UX planning, and upsell strategies.
However, the landscape is changing rapidly. AI technologies are infiltrating our industry at an astonishing pace. Just recently, I reconnected with a former colleague from a previous agency, which once boasted a robust team of 25 SEO copywriters. To my surprise, their team has now dwindled to just four, yet the agency reports a higher monthly revenue from the SEO department than before. The introduction of AI has allowed them to streamline operations significantly, replacing many junior positions with automated tools that can produce high-quality copies while only requiring top-tier writers to refine the outputs for compliance with copyright regulations.
Similarly, another agency I’ve observed has completely offshored its US development team, opting for talent from Latin America. This transition has allowed them to utilize ChatGPT for effective communication within project management platforms like Jira and Slack.
While I wouldn’t say that the industry is on the brink of collapse, the signs of transformation are clear. Automated solutions are becoming adept at creating websites from design files or even sketches, with AI capable of generating precise code for implementing upsell features—all without the need for extensive developer involvement. Additionally, I’m witnessing the rise of AI-powered search engines effortlessly overshadowing traditional SEO practices.
With these changes unfolding, I find myself contemplating the future of my career. I am currently pursuing my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, and it’s possible I may pivot towards a Head of Project Management or Senior PM role in a different sector entirely. It’s a period of uncertainty, and while the future remains unclear, it’s evident that we are navigating uncharted waters in an industry poised for a substantial transformation.
For those of us in the eCommerce space, being adaptable
