Forecasting the Future: My Industry’s Near-Complete Transformation and My Uncertain Path Ahead

Navigating Change: The Impact of AI on the eCommerce Industry

As someone who has dedicated nearly two decades to the eCommerce landscape, I find myself at a pivotal crossroads in my career. At 30 years old, with a wealth of experience that dates back to when I was just 14, I never imagined that I would be facing an uncertain future in such a rapidly evolving industry.

Since I began my career in eCommerce in 2015, I have ascended through various roles—from Sales to Director of Project Management, and now, Director of Partnerships at my current agency. My work has focused predominantly on web development, design projects, and sizable SEO campaigns. These initiatives have often required strategic planning and budgets ranging from $20,000 to over $1 million. My responsibilities have spanned across numerous dimensions, including Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO), User Interface (UI), User Experience (UX) planning, and developing upsell strategies.

However, the recent accelerative force of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has shifted the landscape more dramatically than I ever anticipated. A striking example comes from a former agency where I worked extensively in SEO. When I last checked in, that agency had gone from employing 25 copywriters to a mere four, all while generating an additional $20,000 in billable revenue each month. The reliance on AI tools has enabled them to effectively replace many junior writing roles, allowing their senior team members to focus on refining AI-generated content to navigate copyright challenges.

Moreover, I’ve seen another agency replace their entire U.S. development team with resources from Latin America, who now rely heavily on AI communication tools like ChatGPT to manage tasks through platforms like Jira and Slack.

While I am not suggesting that the eCommerce industry is on the verge of collapse, the unmistakable trend toward automation is undeniable. AI technologies are already capable of transforming Figma designs into fully functional websites, and prompt-based AI is revolutionizing SEO practices, rendering traditional methods increasingly obsolete.

As I reflect on the implications of these changes, I find myself wrestling with uncertainty about what the next five years hold for my career and the industry at large. In response to this shifting landscape, I am currently pursuing my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and contemplating a transition back into a Head of Project Management or Senior Project Manager role in a different sector.

The future feels unpredictable, but one thing is clear: adaptation is crucial. As we navigate these unusual circumstances, I am committed to embracing
