In recent conversations and discussions, one recurring concern has become increasingly alarming: many individuals remain oblivious to the profound implications emerging from the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI). While some dismiss AI as merely a neutral tool, it’s crucial to recognize the broader societal, economic, and ethical impacts it may engender.

A Personal Perspective on AI Advocacy

It’s important to clarify that I am not an opponent of AI. On the contrary, I believe AI and robotics should be harnessed to revolutionize labor, eliminating the need for humans to endure grueling or hazardous jobs just to survive. Human life, I contend, is about more than just work; it’s about personal fulfillment, creativity, and caring for our planet and each other. Embracing AI offers an opportunity to shift our focus from survival to truly enjoying life and exploring our potential.

The Reality of AI’s Maturity

Recently, I discussed with a colleague who utilizes AI daily for coding and app deployment. Despite his reliance on artificial intelligence tools to accomplish tasks he couldn’t manage alone, he presented a rather simplistic analogy about AI’s capabilities—an analogy I found to be quite misguided. I highlighted that many of the major challenges associated with large language models (LLMs)—such as hallucinations (incorrect outputs) and their ability to infer abstract relationships—are now largely addressed for enterprise use. While issues remain, reputable companies are trusting these tools for production-level deployment.

Furthermore, I explained that a significant portion of the younger workforce—around 60% of Generation Z—struggles to find employment post-graduation, partly due to AI-driven automation and a global workforce willing to accept lower wages. The rapid progression of AI technology makes it clear that many jobs, especially white-collar roles, could soon become obsolete.

A Warning About Economic Disruption

Despite awareness among AI experts and industry insiders, many still focus on the potential for profit rather than on the societal upheaval that’s looming. Upcoming years could see unemployment rates soaring to 12% or higher, a figure that may understate the true scope of economic displacement, as official unemployment metrics often overlook those who are underemployed or have given up searching for work.
