Moreover, human-generated disinformation has been proliferating at an unprecedented rate long before AI became prominent. Our capacity to process and filter content is limited, and despite the explosion of fake news and misleading narratives, our habits of consumption tend to remain stable. Essentially, whether the content is human-made or AI-created, the proportion of disinformation we encounter isn’t likely to change dramatically.
The formats often used to spread misleading information—such as short clips with edited context—are inherently flexible and effective. For example, a clip of a politician edited to suggest something they never said can be just as persuasive as outright lies presented in a speech.
