In recent developments, the use of fossil fuel-based backup generators for data center power needs has come under scrutiny for its environmental and public health impacts. Specifically, an AI company’s infrastructure has reportedly relied heavily on methane gas-powered generators to supplement energy demands that the local grid cannot accommodate.

While methane combustion is comparatively cleaner than coal, it still emits harmful pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are known to contribute to air quality deterioration. These emissions pose significant risks, particularly when such generators are operated continuously beyond their intended scope, exacerbating pollution levels.

Alarmingly, the data center in question is situated within a predominantly Black neighborhood already contending with elevated air pollution levels from various industrial sources. Residents face heightened health risks, including increased prevalence of respiratory conditions such as asthma.

Recent reports indicate that the operators have maintained the simultaneous operation of approximately 35 methane generators without proper authorization, even before securing a permit for a subset of these units. This reckless approach to power supply reveals a troubling disregard for community health and regulatory compliance.

The core issue extends beyond environmental concerns related to carbon emissions; it highlights the human toll of powering digital infrastructure. When AI services—such as the widely discussed Grok 4—are powered through proximity to polluting generators, the health of local populations, especially children, is inadvertently being compromised.
