In the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence and large-scale data processing, powering these increasingly demanding systems remains a significant challenge. Recent reports highlight a concerning trend: some facilities resort to environmentally detrimental methods to meet their energy needs, raising serious ethical and health questions.

A major tech entity needed additional energy capacity to train and operate its advanced AI models. However, the local power grid was insufficient to support such high demands. Consequently, the company installed multiple methane gas generators on-site, aiming to supplement their energy supply.

While methane combustion is cleaner than coal, it is far from environmentally benign. These generators emit pollutants, notably nitrogen oxides (NOx), which contribute to air quality degradation. Such emissions are particularly problematic when these generators operate continuously — a necessity for maintaining the data center’s operations — especially since multiple units are running simultaneously at the same location.

Alarmingly, these activities are taking place in a predominantly Black neighborhood already facing significant air quality challenges due to nearby industries. The local community suffers from elevated asthma rates, a problem exacerbated by these additional emissions. The ongoing operation of 35 methane generators, despite only holding permits for 15, underscores a disregard for environmental and public health considerations.

This situation highlights a broader issue: the energy demands of AI models and data centers are rising across the industry. However, powering these facilities through methods that harm the health of nearby residents — especially children — raises profound ethical concerns. As developers and users of AI technology, it is crucial to reflect on the environmental and social impacts of our infrastructure choices.
