To meet the demanding energy needs of training and operating this complex AI, the data center in question required additional power capacity. Unfortunately, the regional electrical grid was insufficient to support such demands. As a result, the operators resorted to deploying onsite methane gas generators to supplement power.
While methane combustion is somewhat cleaner than coal, it still releases pollutants detrimental to air quality—most notably nitrogen oxides (NOx). These emissions can contribute to smog formation and respiratory problems, especially when such generators are operated continuously and in close proximity to residential areas.
Alarmingly, this data center is located within a predominantly Black neighborhood already suffering from poor air quality due to various industrial activities and elevated asthma rates among residents. Despite the region’s vulnerability, the operators have maintained a fleet of 35 methane generators running nonstop, a situation that persists even after obtaining permits for only 15 units.
The approval process for these permits appears inadequate, raising questions about regulatory oversight and environmental justice. Operating multiple generators in close quarters not only exacerbates local pollution but also raises ethical concerns about the health implications for nearby communities.
