With the AI models being trained using Reddit data, do you think by now someone somewhere would have gotten shittymorph’ed?

Exploring AI’s Exposure to Reddit Culture: Have Models Encountered the “Shittymorph” Meme?

As Artificial Intelligence systems are increasingly trained on diverse online content, one has to wonder: have these models been exposed to the more niche and humorous corners of Reddit? Specifically, given that many AI models incorporate Reddit data into their training, is it possible that they’ve encountered the infamous “shittymorph” meme or related references?

This question sparked my curiosity, leading me to test how well modern AI chatbots understand Reddit-specific jargon and memes. For instance, I asked the Gemini AI model to emulate a response in the “shittymorph” style—a distinctive, humorous, and often irreverent manner associated with that meme.

The results were quite revealing; the AI managed to produce content that aligned remarkably well with the expected tone, indicating at least some familiarity with the meme’s stylistic elements. This suggests that the breadth of Reddit data included in training sets might be sufficient for AI models to recognize and reproduce certain niche internet phenomena.

But this opens up further questions: how deep does this understanding go? Could we explore more obscure Reddit lore to gauge the limits of a model’s knowledge of internet culture? Delving into rare memes and subcultures might help us better understand what AI truly “knows” about online communities.

What are your thoughts? Are there other obscure Reddit phenomena you’d be interested in testing AI models against, or methods to quantify their cultural awareness? Let’s discuss the fascinating intersection of AI training data and internet subcultures.
