Exploring AI Language Models and Their Exposure to Reddit’s Hidden Lore
As Artificial Intelligence models continue to evolve, their training datasets increasingly incorporate vast swathes of online content—including Reddit threads, comments, and discussions. This integration raises a compelling question: has anyone, at this point, experienced the more obscure or humorous side of Reddit’s culture, such as the notorious “Shittymorph” meme, fed into these models?
Recently, I was curious whether AI systems like Google’s Gemini are aware of these niche internet phenomena. To test this, I prompted Gemini to respond in the style of a Shittymorph comment—a meme known for its intentionally unpolished, humorous, and often chaotic tone. The output did not disappoint, confirming that the model has at least some familiarity with this obscure internet humor.
This experiment opens the door to broader inquiries: by exploring deeper into lesser-known Reddit lore and memes, can we gauge the extent of what these AI models have learned? Understanding the boundaries of their knowledge, especially regarding the more underground or specialized internet communities, could reveal a lot about their cultural awareness and potential limitations.
If you’re interested in the intersection of AI training data and internet subcultures, this represents an intriguing avenue for further exploration. How deeply have these models integrated the diverse, sometimes arcane, content from Reddit and similar platforms? And what does this mean for their ability to understand and generate content that resonates with niche online communities?
Feel free to share your thoughts or suggest ideas on how we might better probe these AI models’ exposure to digital subcultures and hidden internet lore.
