Exploring AI’s Exposure to Reddit Culture: Have Language Models Encountered “Shittymorph”?
As AI models are increasingly trained on diverse online sources, including Reddit, a compelling question arises: Has any model in existence today been exposed to the infamous “Shittymorph” style? For those unfamiliar, “Shittymorph” is a humorous internet meme characterized by intentionally crude or irreverent language, often popular within certain Reddit communities.
Motivated by this curiosity, I decided to test whether leading AI models—such as Google’s Gemini—are aware of this subculture. When prompting Gemini to generate a response in the “Shittymorph” tone, I was pleased to find that the model successfully adopted the style, demonstrating an understanding of this niche internet humor.
This experiment suggests that large language models, given their expansive training datasets, may indeed have some knowledge of even the more obscure corners of Reddit lore. To deepen this investigation, it would be interesting to explore other niche memes and slang to gauge the extent of these models’ cultural awareness.
