Exploring AI’s Familiarity with Niche Reddit Culture: A Modern Inquiry
As Artificial Intelligence models continue to evolve, they are being trained on vast datasets, including content sourced from platforms like Reddit. This raises intriguing questions about the depth of their cultural and contextual understanding—particularly, whether they’ve been exposed to and can recognize the more obscure or niche elements of online communities.
Recently, I pondered whether any AI model, trained on Reddit data, might have encountered or even been influenced by the infamous “shittymorph” meme or style—an inside joke within certain Reddit circles. Curious about this, I decided to test the capabilities of one such model, Gemini, by prompting it to respond in the style of “shittymorph” comments.
The results were quite revealing. The AI not only responded as intended but demonstrated a decent grasp of the subreddit’s slang and humor. This suggests that, despite being a general model, it has absorbed enough niche knowledge to produce relevant and contextually accurate replies.
This leads to a broader question: could digging deeper into more obscure Reddit lore and genres help us better understand the extent of these models’ training and knowledge? As AI continues to learn from real-world, community-driven data, exploring these hidden corners might offer valuable insights into their capabilities and limitations.
What are your thoughts? Are there particular Reddit subcultures or memes you believe AI models should be exposed to for a richer understanding? Share your ideas and observations below.
