Reevaluating the Threat of Artificial Intelligence: A Reflection on Human Responsibility

Focusing exclusively on AI as a civilization-ending force can distract us from the more pressing and ongoing issues caused by human behavior. For instance, approximately 70% of animal species have faced extinction primarily due to human activities such as deforestation, pollution, and climate change. Our relentless exploitation of natural resources continues to diminish Earth’s vital ecosystems. The depletion of our planet’s forests, oceans, and other vital habitats isn’t driven by Artificial Intelligence, but by human choices and actions.
Furthermore, the persistence of global conflict and societal unrest can be traced back to human tendencies—not AI. The capacity for violence, division, and resource scarcity has existed long before the advent of advanced machines. AI, in this context, is an accomplice that could potentially magnify these issues if wielded irresponsibly.
It’s important to recognize that AI itself is neutral; it doesn’t have motives or desires. The dangers associated with it stem from how humans choose to develop and deploy this technology. Unleashing AI’s full potential without careful oversight might enable us to escalate conflicts, hasten environmental degradation, or exacerbate social inequalities—essentially, accelerating the destructive patterns we’ve already established.
In essence, the real existential threat isn’t emerging solely from artificial intelligence but from aspects of human nature—our tendencies to exploit, destroy, and conflict. AI can be a powerful ally or a destructive force, depending on the values and intentions guiding its use. Ultimately, safeguarding our future hinges on addressing the root causes of harm within human society, rather than attributing the blame solely to the machines we create.
