Will Artificial Intelligence Really Worsen the Disinformation Crisis? A Thoughtful Perspective

In recent discussions, many have expressed concern that the rise of Artificial Intelligence might significantly amplify the spread of false information. The worry is that AI can generate vast quantities of misleading content at scale, overwhelming audiences and complicating efforts to discern truth from fiction.

At first glance, it’s easy to assume that AI-driven content proliferation would lead to an explosion of disinformation, given the prevalence of low-quality and misleading material on social media today. Data shows that AI-generated content is becoming increasingly common, and with it, the potential for mass-produced misinformation grows. But is this necessarily a detrimental trend?

Consider a typical scenario: if you or I spend a few minutes scrolling through TikTok or similar short-form platforms, we might view 100 to 150 videos. Whether these videos are created by humans or AI doesn’t significantly change the quantity we consume; the volume remains similar. While some might argue that AI’s ability to produce more content at a faster rate could increase exposure to disinformation, the reality is more nuanced.

The majority of the content people already encounter online today is produced by humans—disinformation included—on an enormous scale. Adding AI-generated content to this mix doesn’t fundamentally increase the total amount of misleading information that most users are exposed to. Your content consumption tends to be dictated by what you find engaging. For example, your feed might be roughly split among humorous cat videos, amusing fails, political commentary, and miscellaneous media—all largely independent of whether the content is AI-generated or not.

From a broader perspective, AI-driven mischief might be more insidious in its subtlety rather than its volume. For instance, edited clips of public figures or celebrities saying things they never actually said—made possible with advanced editing—represent a form of disinformation that can be more convincing and harder to detect than blatant lies. However, given the immense tide of misinformation already present on digital platforms, such sophisticated manipulations may not substantially shift the overall landscape.

In essence, the challenge isn’t necessarily the quantity of AI-generated falsehoods, but the nature and presentation of deceptive content. The formats used—short clips, snippets, and social media algorithms—are designed to maximize engagement, often blurring the lines between truth and falsehood. Still, it’s worth questioning whether AI truly amplifies this problem or simply adds another layer to an already complex environment.
