Will AI Exacerbate Disinformation? A Closer Look
In recent discussions, many have expressed concern that Artificial Intelligence might significantly increase the spread of disinformation online. The fear is that AI’s ability to generate vast amounts of seemingly authentic content could flood social media platforms with misinformation, making it harder for users to discern truth from falsehood.
However, I remain skeptical about this notion. Consider the typical social media experience—whether browsing TikTok or other platforms—most users tend to watch roughly 100 to 150 short clips per session. When AI-generated content becomes more prevalent, it doesn’t necessarily translate into a proportional increase in exposure to disinformation. The content volume might rise, but the overall patterns remain similar.
Humans are already inundated with a staggering amount of disinformation produced by both individuals and organizations over the years. Introducing additional AI-created false content doesn’t significantly alter what most people encounter daily. Our attention tends to focus on engaging or entertaining material—whether it’s cute cat videos, humorous fails, or emotionally charged political debates. The proportion of disinformation within our media consumption remains relatively stable because our preferences and attention span are limited.
Moreover, disinformation often takes more subtle forms. It’s not always blatant lies; sometimes, it’s manipulated clips or contextually distorted statements, like a compiled video editing together a politician’s words to imply something misleading. For instance, a clip with a provocative caption or a heavily edited segment can propagate disinformation without causing the alarm that overt lies might.
Of course, there is the concern of doctored videos of public figures—images or clips altered to portray them saying things they never did. But in the grand scheme of the information landscape, especially considering how audiences consume media today, such deepfake content might not have a markedly different impact than existing disinformation forms.
In essence, while AI has the potential to produce convincing false content, I believe its influence on the overall volume of disinformation perceived by users may be less profound than some fear. Our media habits, attention limits, and the nature of the content we gravitate toward seem to act as natural filters.
