Understanding the Impact of AI on Disinformation: A Balanced Perspective
In recent discussions about the role of Artificial Intelligence in today’s media landscape, a common concern has emerged: Will AI exacerbate the proliferation of disinformation? Many worry that enhanced content generation capabilities could flood online spaces with misleading or false information at an unprecedented scale. While this is a valid point, I believe the complete picture is more nuanced.
The Reality of Content Generation and Consumption
It’s undeniable that AI has made it easier to produce vast amounts of content, much of which can be low-quality or misleading—what some refer to as “AI-generated slop.” When observing social media platforms like TikTok, YouTube Shorts, or Instagram Reels, it’s clear that a significant portion of content is either AI-assisted or AI-created. Naturally, this suggests an increase in the volume of misinformation, right?
However, the act of consuming content tends to be relatively consistent. Whether you’re scrolling through TikTok or browsing YouTube, most users typically watch a limited number of videos within a given session—say, around 100 to 150 short clips. Adding more AI-generated content doesn’t necessarily mean users will watch more, as their attention span and interest boundaries remain constant.
Moreover, the sheer scale of human-generated disinformation over the years has already reached monumental levels. We’re exposed to an overwhelming amount of false or misleading information daily—much of it so pervasive that adding more doesn’t drastically alter what we see or believe. In essence, the infusion of AI-generated disinformation might not significantly change individual exposure patterns.
Content Format and Perception
Another critical factor is how digital content is presented. Many disinformation efforts now leverage subtle cues—through edited clips, provocative language, or emotionally charged snippets—that blend seamlessly into regular media. For instance, a heavily edited clip of a public figure, paired with sensational commentary, can be mistaken for genuine content, even if it’s not entirely accurate.
The challenge here is that such formats often manipulate perception without overtly lying, making disinformation harder to identify. That said, considering the vast volume of existing misinformation, the incremental impact of AI-created falsehoods might be relatively limited in shifting overall information landscapes.

While there’s a possibility that AI could enable the creation of doctored images or videos of public figures saying things they never did—deepfake technology is a concerning development—the overall influence on information consumption might be less dramatic than anticipated.
