Will AI Really Worsen the Disinformation Crisis? A Balanced Perspective
As Artificial Intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into our digital landscapes, many experts and observers have expressed concern that AI-driven content generation will exacerbate the spread of disinformation. The fear is that, at scale, AI can produce vast amounts of misleading or false information, flooding social media and other platforms with “junk” and making it harder for users to discern truth from fiction.
However, I believe this worrying trajectory may not be as inevitable as it seems.
Consider the typical user experience: whether you’re scrolling through TikTok or browsing any social media feed, most people consume a limited number of short-form videos or posts daily—often around 100 to 150 pieces. Introducing AI-generated content into this mix does not necessarily increase the total volume of information we encounter; it simply adds more noise that is indistinguishable in volume from human-created content.
It’s crucial to recognize that we’ve already dealt with an enormous, almost incomprehensible, amount of human-generated disinformation over recent years. This existing flood of falsehoods, misinformation, and sensationalism has likely saturated our feeds and algorithms. Therefore, the addition of AI-generated “junk” might not significantly alter the overall landscape for most consumers.
Our content consumption patterns tend to favor entertainment—images of cute animals, viral fails, emotional stories, and political debates. These categories form the core of what we see daily, regardless of whether the source is human or AI. As a result, the proportion of disinformation specific to AI-generated content may not substantially increase what reaches our eyes.
Moreover, disinformation often takes subtler forms, such as manipulated images or clips rather than outright falsehoods. For example, a clip featuring a political figure with heavy editing or contextually altered snippets can be deceptively convincing. These manipulations can be more insidious than blatant lies and might become more prevalent with AI’s capabilities. Still, given the sheer scale of existing misinformation, such advanced falsehoods may not significantly shift our overall media experience.
The primary concern is the potential for AI to create realistic yet fabricated videos—”deepfakes” of politicians or celebrities saying things they never did. While this is a valid worry, I believe that the impact of these personalized forgeries, against the backdrop of an already overwhelming disinformation environment, will be limited in changing how most people consume or interpret media.
