Will Artificial Intelligence Exacerbate the Disinformation Crisis? A Closer Look

In recent discussions about the influence of AI on information integrity, a common concern has been the potential surge in disinformation. Many worry that as AI tools become more capable, they will facilitate the mass production of misleading or false content, overwhelming the digital landscape.

At first glance, this fear seems justified. AI can generate vast amounts of “junk” data, and when we consider social media as a whole, it’s clear that AI-generated content has become increasingly prevalent. The logical conclusion is that the volume of disinformation might rise dramatically as AI-driven content proliferates.

However, I believe this perspective overstates the potential impact. Consider this analogy: when you or I pick up a smartphone with the intent to “scroll TikTok,” we typically view around 100 to 150 short videos. If AI-generated content floods these platforms, would our consumption truly increase in terms of information volume? Probably not, because the limit is largely dictated by our attention span and interest, not by content availability.

Furthermore, human-generated disinformation has existed at enormous scales for years—so much so that we’re already exposed to more falsehoods than we can possibly process. Adding additional AI-generated misinformation doesn’t necessarily expand our exposure unless it significantly changes the nature or volume of content we encounter. Our consumption patterns remain anchored by what we find engaging, which tends to be predictable: cat videos, funny incidents, political commentary, or miscellaneous entertainment.

It’s also worth noting the subtlety of modern disinformation strategies. Instead of blatant falsehoods, many leaks and manipulations now emerge via more nuanced formats—edited clips, provocative snippets, or partial truths that are easily mistaken for genuine content. For example, a heavily edited video with incendiary commentary can deceive viewers without appearing blatantly false, making disinformation harder to detect.

The concern about AI fabricating entirely fake clips of politicians or celebrities is valid, yet against the vast sea of existing misinformation and the ways people consume media today, such manipulations might not significantly alter the overarching information environment.

In sum, while AI certainly introduces new tools that could aid disinformation efforts, I believe its impact on the volume of false content we interact with is less significant than some fear. The core challenge remains in how this content is curated and consumed, not solely in its production capacity.
