Many worry that the scalability of AI tools might lead to an overwhelming influx of fabricated or misleading content across social media platforms. Political disinformation, while present, typically occupies a relatively small slice of our overall viewing experience. Accordingly, the presence of AI-crafted disinformation might not drastically alter what we see regularly.

It’s important to recognize that not all disinformation is blatant falsehoods. Much of it is artfully embedded within the formats we consume—short clips, edited videos, and social media snippets. For example, a heavily edited clip featuring a celebrity or politician saying something they never actually said can easily be mistaken for authentic content. Such nuanced manipulations are harder to detect and often slip past both algorithmic filters and viewer scrutiny.
In such cases, the issue isn’t just AI-generated disinformation, but the medium through which it is delivered. The combination of compelling, short-form content with subtle edits reconstructs reality in a way that can be convincing without overt deception.
