Does AI Really Exacerbate the Problem of Disinformation? A Balanced Perspective
In recent discussions, a common concern has emerged: that Artificial Intelligence will significantly amplify the spread of false information, flooding social media platforms with generated junk content. Many worry that, due to AI’s ability to produce large volumes of content at scale, disinformation might become more prevalent and harder to distinguish from genuine material.
However, I believe this assumption warrants reevaluation. Consider a typical activity like scrolling through TikTok or similar platforms. Whether the content is generated by humans or AI, the number of videos one typically views in a session remains roughly the same—often around 100 to 150 short clips. Introducing AI-generated content does not necessarily increase this volume; it mostly replaces existing content.
Moreover, the sheer amount of human-generated disinformation that has existed for years already surpasses what AI can produce in the short term. Our consumption patterns and attention span remain relatively stable, meaning the proportion of disinformation we encounter doesn’t dramatically change because of AI. Our eyes will still gravitate toward content that entertains or engages us—be it cat videos, viral falls, political commentary, or other miscellaneous material—regardless of whether it was created by a human or an AI.
It’s also worth noting that AI-mediated disinformation often finds subtle ways to influence perception. For instance, edited clips of public figures, such as politicians or celebrities, can be deceptively convincing. A clip with a manipulated audio or video overlay might seem innocuous at first glance but carries significant potential to mislead. Yet, given the vast volume of media consumed daily, such doctored content is unlikely to drastically change overall exposure to falsehoods.
In essence, the format and consumption habits of social media tend to determine our exposure to disinformation more than the sheer volume of generated content. While AI can produce convincing forgeries, the fundamental challenge remains: distinguishing truth from falsehood is more about critical engagement than about the quantity of content.
