Will AI Really Worsen Disinformation? A Thoughtful Perspective
In recent discussions, a common concern has emerged around artificial intelligence’s role in amplifying disinformation. Many worry that AI’s capacity to generate vast quantities of content will lead to an overwhelming flood of false or misleading information, making it harder for users to discern truth from fiction.
However, upon closer examination, this assumption may not fully account for how human attention and content consumption actually work. For instance, whether scrolling through TikTok or browsing social media, most users tend to engage with a relatively consistent volume of content—say, around 100 to 150 short videos—regardless of whether this material is AI-generated or created by humans. The presence of AI-driven content doesn’t necessarily increase this number; it simply replaces or adds to existing content.
Moreover, human interaction with online media has long been flooded with both genuine and fabricated information—much of which was created without AI’s help. The addition of AI-generated material might increase the quantity, but it doesn’t fundamentally change the proportion of disinformation we encounter. Our media preferences are often rooted in entertainment, humor, or emotional resonance, which tend to stay consistent over time. The typical content mix, including funny videos, viral clips of mishaps, political debates, and miscellaneous entertainment, remains fairly stable.
In essence, AI’s role in generating disinformation might be more nuanced than simply increasing its volume. Many disinformation techniques—such as edited images or videos—have been around for years. AI can produce convincing fake clips of politicians or celebrities, but given the vast scale of existing misinformation, these AI-crafted fakes don’t dramatically alter the overall landscape or the way we process information.
It’s also worth noting that disinformation often relies on subtle framing or content formats that are more about presentation than outright lies. For example, a clip edited to sound provocative, or a misleading quote from a public figure, can be just as impactful as a blatant falsehood, regardless of whether AI was involved.
While it’s reasonable to be cautious about AI’s potential to produce more convincing and harder-to-detect false content, the fundamental dynamics of media consumption suggest that it may not worsen disinformation as dramatically as some fear. Instead, our attention spans and content preferences might still limit the overall exposure to fake news, even in an increasingly AI-augmented media environment.
