While methane combustion is cleaner than coal, it is not without environmental consequences. These generators emit pollutants, notably nitrogen oxides (NOx), which significantly degrade air quality. Such emissions are particularly problematic when multiple generators operate simultaneously, as they can contribute to local air pollution and pose health risks to nearby communities.
Alarmingly, these generators are running continuously in a predominantly Black neighborhood already burdened with poor air quality due to other industrial activities. The area reports high asthma rates and respiratory health issues, making the ongoing emissions an urgent concern.
There are reports that the company operated around 35 methane generators non-stop for months, despite only recently obtaining a permit for 15 units. The fact that they managed to operate so many without proper authorization raises serious questions about regulatory oversight and corporate responsibility.
