In the pursuit of cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence technology, many companies face significant logistical hurdles—particularly when it comes to powering their data centers. Recently, reports have highlighted a troubling practice involving the use of onsite methane gas generators to meet energy demands, raising serious environmental and public health concerns.

Despite the recognized benefits of cleaner-burning fuels compared to coal, methane combustion still releases pollutants like nitrogen oxides (NOx), which can deteriorate air quality and jeopardize respiratory health. When these generators are operated continuously, their emissions accumulate, posing a risk—especially in densely populated neighborhoods.

In this case, a major AI company has been operating around 35 methane generators non-stop without proper permits, despite recent applications for a smaller number of units. While their need for substantial power is understandable, deploying such a significant amount of fossil fuel infrastructure in a residential area is ethically questionable.
