For instance, certain facilities dedicated to training and operating large-scale AI models lack access to sufficient grid power, prompting them to utilize on-site methane gas generators. While these generators emit less pollution compared to coal, they still produce harmful pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are detrimental to air quality.
Alarmingly, these generators are not designed for constant operation. Running them continuously—especially in large numbers—can significantly degrade local air conditions. This issue becomes particularly urgent when such facilities are located in predominantly Black neighborhoods already burdened by industrial pollution and high rates of respiratory illnesses like asthma.
In some cases, AI companies have operated dozens of these generators without proper permits, raising questions about regulatory oversight and environmental responsibility. Recently, there have been instances where permissions were granted for a fraction of the existing operational capacity, yet the full extent of the generators’ use remains unregulated.
