The Truth About AI Industry: Profit Over Humanity?
In recent years, we’ve been bombarded with lofty claims from tech giants like OpenAI about how Artificial Intelligence will revolutionize our world—solving climate change, curing diseases, and ushering in a new era of prosperity. But is this optimistic narrative reflective of reality, or is it simply a veneer for something more profit-driven?
Let’s be honest: Much of the rhetoric surrounding AI’s potential benefits echoes past false narratives of benevolence. Companies publicly state their missions to serve humanity, emphasizing visions of a future where AI alleviates our biggest challenges. They highlight their non-profit intentions, suggesting that their ultimate goal is to enhance quality of life and address global crises—all while claiming that someday, in a “post-scarcity society,” money will become irrelevant.
The sobering truth, however, tells a different story. The core driver behind much of the AI industry appears to be financial gain. From the outset, many firms have been motivated by the prospect of rapid wealth accumulation, often at the expense of safety, ethics, and societal wellbeing.
Take a look at the evolution within companies like OpenAI. Early on, they dedicated significant resources to research aimed at safe and responsible development. They assembled specialized teams to mitigate risks and ensure that AI technologies would benefit society without harm. Yet, as the potential to scale large language models (LLMs) emerged, priorities shifted. Instead of continuing cautious innovation, the focus moved toward deploying increasingly massive models for commercial gain.
Large-scale LLMs, fed with enormous datasets, became golden calves—profitable products that could be monetized easily by big corporations. Over time, these companies disbanded their safety teams, viewing safety protocols as bottlenecks to profitability, and shifted all research and development toward commercialization.
This focus on profit isn’t accidental. The AI industry’s main goal has become replacing human workers with automation—reducing costs and increasing margins, not curing diseases or combating climate change. Genuine research into alternative applications, safety, and societal impacts has largely been sidelined or shut down. Confidentiality and secrecy have replaced open scientific discourse, ensuring that profits remain the industry’s primary concern.
