Exploring AI’s Awareness of Reddit Culture: Are Language Models Familiar with Niche Reddit Memes?
As Artificial Intelligence systems are increasingly trained on data scraped from platforms like Reddit, an intriguing question arises: have these models become familiar with the more unique and humorous subcultures found within these communities? Specifically, could an AI recognize and generate content influenced by Reddit’s distinctive humor, slang, and memes?
Recently, I decided to put this theory to the test. I prompted a popular AI model—Gemini—to respond in the style of “shittymorph,” a well-known meme persona within certain Reddit circles. The results? Spot-on and unexpectedly authentic.
This little experiment highlights how AI models may have absorbed a surprising amount of niche online culture, especially the more prevalent themes circulating on Reddit. But it also opens up a broader question: to what extent do these models understand the less mainstream, more obscure aspects of Reddit lore?
Delving into these hidden corners could offer valuable insights into the depth and breadth of AI language models’ cultural awareness. If you have ideas or suggestions for Reddit references or genres to explore, I’d love to hear them. The intersection of AI and internet subcultures is a fascinating field, full of surprises and opportunities for discovery.
